Massachusetts state lawmaker requests federal human trafficking probe of DeSantis migrant move

September 20, 2022

A state lawmaker representing Martha’s Vineyard has called for a federal investigation into Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis’s relocation of migrants to the island last week, reports The Hill.

Massachusetts State Representative Dylan Fernandes (D)—who has repeatedly attacked DeSantis for chartering two planes to transport the migrants—made the request on Sunday, September 18.

“We are requesting that the Department of Justice open an investigation to hold DeSantis & others accountable for these inhumane acts,” Fernandes wrote on Twitter. “Not only is it morally criminal; there are legal implications around fraud, kidnapping, deprivation of liberty, and human trafficking.”

Fernandes said he has spoken with U.S. Attorney Rachel Rollins, adding that she was pushing for a Justice Department response.

The Hill has reached out to the Justice Department for comment.

Two flights with nearly 50 migrants landed on Wednesday, September 14 ,in Martha’s Vineyard, an island known for its popularity among the wealthy. The migrants have since been moved to Joint Base Cape Cod.

“They already bused them out, they’re gone,” DeSantis said on Friday. “They said we want everyone, no one’s illegal, and they’re gone within 48 hours.”

The flights raised questions as to how the migrants came to believe boarding the planes were there best option. Local officials have suggested the migrants were misled.

The relocations were the latest iterations of Republican governors busing and flying migrants to Democrat-run, northern areas of the country. The governors argue the relocations provide relief to border communities overwhelmed by President Joe Biden’s immigration policies—hoping to raise awareness for immigration policy changes in Washington, D.C.

Lawyers for Civil Rights, a Boston-based group that represents more than 30 of the migrants flown to Massachusetts, similarly called for a federal investigation into their relocations.

“While we are working to protect our clients’ rights in immigration proceedings and exploring remedies for civil rights violations, we also strongly believe that criminal laws were broken by the perpetrators of this stunt,” the group wrote in letters to Rollins and Massachusetts’s attorney general.

“We therefore ask that you open a criminal investigation into this matter,” the letters continued.

DeSantis is one of three Republican governors who have relocated migrants in recent months. Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) has bused thousands of migrants to Washington, D.C., New York City, and Chicago in recent months, while Arizona Governor Doug Ducey (R) has sent nearly 2,000 migrants to D.C.

Alan Dershowitz laments he’s lost ‘lots and lots’ of pals after blow-up with Larry David over Trump ties

August 23, 2021

A pretty, pretty strange scene that could have appeared on Curb Your Enthusiasm played out in real life when Larry David cussed out Alan Dershowitz over his ties to former President Donald Trump during an encounter in a Martha’s Vineyard grocery store, Newsweek reports.

As also reported by Page Six and Raw Story—and confirmed by Dershowitz himself—the two former friends were spotting coming to blows at grocery store and community hub Chilmark General Store on the island, which is known to be a haunt of Democrat mainstays.

The Harvard Law professor is said to be persona non grata on the island due to his links with former President Donald Trump.

Appearing on Newsmax on Thursday night, August 19, the high-profile attorney was asked about the highly-publicized shouting match with the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star outside of the local grocery store.

According to the New York Post, David confronted the attorney—who had asked if they were still friends, and received a tongue-lashing in return.

“No,” the comedian reportedly shot back. “No. We really can’t. I saw you. I saw you with your arm around [Former Trump Secretary of State Mike] Pompeo! It’s disgusting!”

David then reportedly added, “It’s disgusting. Your whole enclave — it’s disgusting. You’re disgusting!”

During his Newsmax appearance, Dershowitz went on at length about his continued lack of popularity—after having served as a legal adviser to Trump—and even though he claims he voted for President Joe Biden in 2020.

“There I was having a cup of coffee with a friend on the porch of the Chilmark store, which is a kind of local gathering place a general store, and Larry starts screaming at me saying, you know—ah he just couldn’t control himself,” the attorney recalled. “I thought he was going to have a stroke.”

Noting Pompeo is a former student of his, Dershowitz continued, “He’s my former student; of course I’m going to pat him on the back and congratulate him for the work he has done. But that wasn’t enough for Larry David—I’m disgusting,” before pointedly adding he helped David’s daughter get into college.

Dershowitz continued, “I defended President Trump in front of the Senate and I patted Mike Pompeo on the back that’s enough to end a 25-year friendship,” before being asked if he feels like he feels being treated like a “traitor.”

“I’m a Democrat. I defended Ted Kennedy; I defend Senator Alan Cranston; I tried to help defend President Clinton—almost all of my clients who have been politicians have been Democrats—but because I also defended the constitution on behalf of Donald Trump that was enough,” he recalled, with Newsweek reporting, “Dershowitz went on to say he doesn’t mind being socially ostracized but that he has been ‘canceled’ by a number of local Chilmark institutions on Martha’s Vineyard including the library, community center, the book fair, and Hebrew center.”

With that, he claimed he’s lost “lots and lots of friends” over his Trump ties, before adding, “When you start blaming the lawyer because you don’t agree with the client, that’s McCarthyism.”

‘Megxit’ effect: Could Vancouver Island be the next Martha’s Vineyard?

February 19, 2020

Following  a “battle royal” among  the  members of Britain’s sovereign Windsor family, Prince Harry and his wife—the former (and future?) actress Meghan Markle—and their son, Archie, have been living on Canada’s posh Vancouver Island, located just off the coast of British Columbia.

In taking up residence on the island, either temporarily or permanently, the Sussexes have instantly elevated awareness of the 12,000-square-mile enclave—now trending globally as the next “it” place to buy property or vacation.

“Vancouver Island is now on the map as a place where royals reside and live, similar to Martha’s Vineyard being put on the map by the Kennedys and Kennebunkport by the Bushes,” Eric Smallwood, president of the Apex Marketing Group, told NBC News this week. “The focus will be tourism. A little longer term, it will be real estate.”

Smallwood told the network news outlet thatd all of the buzz is worth more than $38 million in positive brand value for the country, with that number increasing daily based on news coverage and information about the Sussexes’ new life on Vancouver Island, according to an analysis he conducted for NBC News.

Sotheby’s Realty lists 57 luxury homes for sale on the island for anyone who might be interested in living like a royal. One home, billed as a “surfer’s paradise” located on the water is priced at $10.5 million, while another “luxurious oceanfront estate” is on the market for nearly $6.8 million.

Additionally, Levine predicted that the couple’s presence could lead to a new cottage industry: independent, “not-so-royal tours, which highlight the family’s favorite local shops, restaurants and playgrounds,” he said. “There may be a temporary influx of visitors trying to catch a glimpse of the couple out and about.”

“Canada has been trying to advance tourism to British Columbia,” Levine added. “So, if whale watching isn’t working, maybe ‘Markle spotting’ will be a hit.”

George Hanson, president and CEO of the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance, told NBC News he is “continually surprised at how few North Americans are aware of our island,” which is a short trip from Seattle. Hanson said he’s thrilled that the island is now known by people around the world.

“Vancouver Island is one of the most progressive, beautiful, pristine. and spacious destinations in the world,” he said. “We understand why Harry and Meghan might choose to live here and why others not familiar with the island might want to come see this appeal for themselves.”

“The couple could have chosen to live anywhere in North America and they selected Vancouver Island. That’s a powerful endorsement and is generating positive buzz for the community,” said Andy Levine, chairman of the marketing company Development Counsellors International.
